Now in its 63rd year, this month-long national health observance brings together thousands of dedicated dental professionals, health care providers and others to promote the benefits of good oral health to children and adults, caregivers, teachers and many others.
Parents and teachers can help kids celebrate and learn more about the importance of a healthy smile. The ADA offers free downloadable information, kid-friendly oral health worksheets and games on MouthHealthy.org, the ADA’s consumer website. Click on the For Kids tab on the left side of the page for a variety of age-appropriate activities, games and videos and presentations. There are also teaching guides that adults can use at home, in the classroom or in other community-based settings.

Instilling Good Dental Habits in Your Kids
With the use of the latest technology and a fun and comfortable office environment, we wish to encourage a lifetime of good dental hygiene in your child. Children’s teeth are more susceptible to cavities due to certain factors:
- They do not do an adequate job of brushing. Parents should be a part of a child’s daily dental hygiene to help them develop good habits.
- Children eat more often, which results in prolonged exposure to acid (acid is created whenever you eat) with the end result of more cavities.
- If a tooth is not as clean as it needs to be, when it is exposed to more food and juice, it will more easily have cavities develop.
A combination of good dietary and hygiene habits along with the application of a fluoride varnish will greatly reduce the chance of cavities.
Preventing Decay in Your Child’s Teeth
Even meticulous brushing may not reach all the grooves and contours in teeth. Areas that are missed will have a build-up of bacteria, plaque, and acids that lead to decay. When decay has begun, the tooth is permanently damaged and needs a crown or filling. Today, we can apply dental sealants to help prevent this from happening.
This is the way it works:
After the tooth is cleaned and sterilized, we apply a clear, thin, plastic coat. A curing light is used on the sealant so it will form a bond with the tooth. The procedure is painless and takes only a few minutes, and no shots or drills are used. The entire tooth remains healthy and intact. This is the best preventive measure for both children and adolescents to preserve their teeth.
